Against the background of smoke and grit, and the jagged, ghostly
remains of one of the Towers of the World Trade Center, called
"The Flower" by Ground Zero Rescue Workers, a New York
Firefighter, covered with grime and straining with the weight of
the unfathomable tragedy around him, said, "This isn’t what the
job is supposed to be." Before September 11th, 2001, who among
the first responders of America - Firefighters, Police Officers,
Emergency Medical Personnel and other Emergency Workers,
would have imagined the unspeakable barbarism committed upon
innocent people going about their daily routines on that sparkling
September morning? By hideous acts of suicidal fanaticism, the
lives of several thousand human beings, including more than 300
Firefighters, Police and Rescue Personnel, who heroically rushed
into harm’s way to protect and save the innocent, were
exterminated. No, it isn’t what the job is supposed to be. As
prepared as we are, nothing in our training or experience, ever
prepared us for this. But since that awful morning, the entire world
has been witness to the commitment, brotherhood, and caring of
these excellent people, who dedicate their lives to the protection of
others. And we, the public safety community, witnessed the
transformation of what the job now is and will be for the future.
We can best memorialize these heroes, who paid the ultimate price
of service to others, by dedicating ourselves to supporting and
protecting the people who are willing to do this work, to the
absolute best of our ability. The world will not soon forget what
those Firefighters, Police Officers and Rescue Personnel did on
September 11th. We, the public safety services, will never forget.
And like the anonymous New York firefighter, who went back to
his grim work, we will go on and do what we do, in a job
transformed by the events of September 11th, 2001. May we all be
so blessed to survive the fate that fell our brothers. May their souls
be lifted and held higher than any others. May they sit alongside
the presence of our Maker, Himself. And may He bless, as He has
blessed no others, the little ones and loved ones of those he has
called home.
God bless those who gave their lives.
God bless those who lost their lives.
God bless America.
